No, the retina or eyeball cannot be transplanted or changed. What patients call "eye transplant" is actually a corneal transplant – only the front part of the eye called the cornea can be replaced. Yes, in most cases a detached retina can be re-attached to its normal position with retina surgery such as scleral buckling or gas tamponade. However it is important to remember a successful anatomical reattachment doesn't always mean a full return of retina function as before detachment.
