The Winter Eye Care Guide

10 Tips to take care of your eyes this winter

Though everyone thinks summer is the only season to take care of your eyes from the strong Sun rays, it’s equally important to protect your eyes in winters too.

Some Factors that impact eyes in winters:

  1. UV radiation:
Excessive UV exposure via direct sunlight is known to increase the risk of cataracts and macular degeneration. That’s why doctors suggest using sunscreens and sunglasses during prolonged outdoor activities.
  2. Viral season:
Viruses thrive when people stay together in enclosed spaces. This is usually why we see an increase in  viral infections in winters, including those of the eye, ie viral conjunctivitis.
  3. Nutrition:

We tend to eat less fresh fruit or salads as we prefer food which is warm. We also drink less water, leading to dehydration and certain vitamin deficiency.
  4. Warm indoor air:
The circulated indoor air can also be damaging for eyes as it may be from heaters which lets air out and can cause eye discomfort.
  5. Outdoor dry air:
As outdoor temperature drops in winter, the air also cools down, and does not hold as much moisture. These cold winds   can cause evaporation of our tear film, resulting in dry eye, causing irritation and dryness.
  6. Physical activity:
The cold weather makes us all lethargic and want to snuggle under a blanket, watching Netflix or YouTube! Often meaning we lie on the bed while not giving our eyes the rest (not sleeping )

Winter eye care tips:

  1. Turn down the temperature of central heating to a neutral temperature for moisture retention in your eyes.
  2. Keep a safe distance from blowers or heaters so that the hot air doesn’t blow on your face.
  3. Remember to blink while watching your favourite show, huddled under a blanket.
  4. Temptation to touch our eyes with our hands or rub our eyes just for a little relief from the irritation. But this relief can lead to some unwanted bacterial/ virus infections. Avoid touching your eyes, especially with unclean hands.
  5. Don’t share eye makeup, wash those brushes and throw away old makeup. Remember to remove all eye makeup and contact lenses before sleeping. This will reduce chances of an infection.
  6. Eat a well balanced diet and don’t forget to drink water! This provides essential nutrients for good health and eyesight.
  7. Carry your sunglasses especially if you spend a long time outdoors. The UV rays can be harsh, especially at higher altitudes.
  8. Some Sun is good for you. As we wear full sleeved clothing, we don’t get enough vitamin D in winters. Remember to soak up some sunshine daily but never stare at the sun, even in winters!
  9. Exercise! Regular physical activity is essential to maintain good health. Exercise benefits eyes by helping keep glaucoma under control by helping diabetics maintain sugars and by lowering hypertension. All this has indirect benefits on the eyes!
  10. If your eyes feel excessively dry, do not repeatedly wash your face. Also do NOT put any oil or cream into your eyes, this is dangerous and can lead to loss of vision. Instead, check with your eye specialists.
