what are the Types of Retinal Vascular Occlusions?

Retinal vein occlusion

Retinal artery occlusion

1. Retinal Vein Occlusion

Venous Occlusions are the more common of the two and have a better prognosis. It can be Central Retinal Vein Occlusion, Branch Retinal Vein Occlusion Or Hemi Retinal Vein occlusion. Read more here.

It can be Central Retinal Artery Occlusion, Branch Retinal Artery Occlusion. Prognosis is poorer vs. Venous Occlusions. Read more here.

Signs and symptoms of Retinal Vascular Occlusion

Gradual or sudden painless loss of vision
Blurry or missing letters while reading
Dark spots or lines floating in your vision

Risk factors of Retinal vascular occlusion

In older patients, the most common risk factors are

Diabetes
Hypertension
Obesity
Atherosclerosis / cardiac problems
Smoking
Glaucoma
Coagulation disorders / blood disorders
Inflammatory disorders like giant cell arteritis

Diagnosis and Management of Retinal Vascular Disorders

The following Investigations help us visualise the blockage, see the areas of non-perfusion and also document the state of the retina and the macula:

Comprehensive dilated retina exam

Comprehensive dilated retina exam
Optical coherence tomography (OCT)

A useful non-invasive diagnostic modality for diagnosing edema or swelling due to vascular occlusions.
Fluorescein Angiography

Detailed analysis of retinal vasculature and also helps to prognosticate the disease.
Cardiologist

We may also suggest a follow up with a cardiologist, monitoring of your blood pressure and blood tests to rule out clotting disorders.

Treatment of Retinal Vascular Occlusion In Delhi Ncr

Prevention of Retinal Vascular Occlusions

The best way to prevent retinal vascular occlusion is to identify and treat the risk factors

Since retinal vascular occlusion stems from vascular problems, it’s important to make lifestyle and dietary changes to protect your vasculature (blood vessels) and keep your heart healthy. These changes include:

Exercising regularly
Maintaining a healthy weight
Eating a balanced diet rich in antioxidants
Not smoking
Controlling diabetes by keeping your blood sugar at a healthy level
Monitoring & control of hypertension (high blood pressure) and cardiac probelms
Regular follow-ups with doctors if you take OCPs or other medication which may predispose you to a hypercoagulable state.
If you have a family history of heart or vascular eye problems, please get regular eye check-ups done.
Regular follow ups if you have conditions like vasculitis.
