DNB Programme And Vitreoretina Fellowship

At Shroff Eye Centre, medical education is of utmost importance. The objective is to train budding ophthalmologists, thereby contributing to the national cause of building healthcare resources.

Shroff Eye Centre has been recognized by the National Board of Examinations (NBE) for the post graduate training in ophthalmology -DNB ophthalmology (2 primary seats per year). The admission is through the CET and counseling, as per NBE protocol. In addition, we also offer a fellowship programme in vitreoretina (18 months duration- one seat per year). A Stipend is paid to the DNB students as per NBE norms and fellows as per hospital norms.

We believe that learning should facilitate higher forms of thinking, such as analyzing, evaluating, applying and developing skills, rather than just memorizing facts.

We have divided the curriculum into nine modules (Optics and refraction. Cornea and external diseases, Uvea, Lens, Squint and neuro-ophthalmology, Pediatric ophthalmology, Orbit and Oculoplasty, Vitreous and retina, Community ophthalmology). Interactive sessions are held three times a week between the students and the faculty to cover all these topics comprehensively. The students are encouraged to prepare for the topics in advance and are randomly chosen to give a presentation, thereby promoting self study  and public speaking at the same time. Seminars are held once a week when students have to prepare a power-point presentation on a topic from the ongoing module. Case presentations are done twice a week to enable students to learn the practical aspects of diagnosis and management of common and complex eye diseases. The students are also posted in the OPDs of different sub-specialities, by rotation, to enhance clinical skills. The students are encouraged to have empathy, be humble and responsible towards patients and develop high standards of ethics in their practice. Internal assessment in theory and practical is conducted at the end of each module to promote a thorough revision of the topic.

In addition to the basic techniques like slit lamp biomicroscopy, direct and indirect ophthalmoscopy, gonioscopy, tonometry, retinoscopy, that the students learn, the institute is also equipped with the latest instruments and machines eg. Optical biometry, Ultrasound (A- and B- scan), Specular microscope, Pentacam, Aberrometer, I-Trace, Keratograph, OCT, Visual field analysis, GDx etc. Students are encouraged to get hands on experience in using and interpreting the results of these tests. The Retinal imaging department is equipped with the latest ultra-wide field angiography by OPTOS and DNB and retina fellows get ample opportunity to use these equipments.
