A good night’s sleep can do wonders. The old saying ‘Sleep heals you’ is not just some conjured folklore, instead when dug deep by medical sciences it stood out to be a fountain of elixir for the body.

Why is Sleep Important for Your Health ?

Apart from the concerned advice we get to hear from our near & dear ones ( especially elders), knowing the benefits of sleep can help you reconsider binge-watching Netflix or tiring your body for late hours.

While our body is in constant round-the-clock repairing and detoxifying mode, the time when you Sleep is a bracket where every muscle, connective tissue and cells renews every part of the body more efficiently.

Apart from it, long term memories are organised, chemicals brought to normal levels and your immunity boosted.
Yes, now imagine how ‘not having good sleep’ would have slowed down it all.

How is it important for the EYES ?

While sleep impacts the whole body, the window to our health – our ‘eyes’ functions naked to the environment for most part of the day which is why it’s important to treat them to some long hours of rest.

Sleep can help in:

  1. Gives the eyes a break, leading to healthier eye function and better vision.
  2. If you don’t sleep enough it can lead to dry eye syndrome due to evaporation of tears. Dry eye causes irritation, grittiness, redness of eye and blurred vision. This can cause difficulty in daily life chores like driving, eye problems using screens.
  3. The improved lubrication, healthier tissue of eyes are only possible with a good amount of sleep.

How can I get myself to sleep?

  1. Give your blue screens some rest. Some time before sleeping, turn off your computer and mobile. Too much mental stimulation from screens makes it a challenge to fall asleep.
  2. Try techniques to relax your body. Try a warm bath, meditation, cup of herbal tea or anything that helps you unwind before you go to bed.
  3. Eat healthy. Heavy meat can keep you up for longer than you would have thought. But that doesn’t mean you should sleep hungry at night. Try and eat lighter meals at night
  4. Don’t sleep in discomfort. Make sure your pillows and mattress are comfortable allowing your body to fall into good slumber.
  5. See a doctor to rule out sleep apnea if you can’t get good sleep!

The amount of sleep varies from person to person. Generally, 6 to 8 hours of sleep each night is recommended for adults. Teenagers and young children may require a little more amount of sleep for their growing bodies.
