What to expect after LASIK Surgery?

A short guide to caring for your eyes after your eyesight correction surgery, LASIK.

What is LASIK?

LASIK, which means laser in-situ keratomileusis, is a type of Refractive eye surgery that is done to correct vision. As this surgery uses lasers, it is also called Laser Eye Surgery by some patients.

LASIK procedure may be able to correct your eye power if you are nearsighted or farsighted, or have astigmatism.

This surgery works by reshaping your cornea and thus reducing or correcting your specs power.

How soon can I see an improvement in eyesight after LASIK?

Most patients notice a change in vision almost immediately after lasik treatment or within 24-48 hours! Vision rapidly improves as the days pass following a LASIK for eyes.

Is LASIK procedure painful?

Many patients ask us, does LASIK hurt or about lasik side effects?

LASIK does not hurt. During the procedure you will not experience any pain as anesthetic drops will be used to numb the eye for the surgery. Some people do experience slight discomfort or a pressure sensation. After surgery, you may have a little discomfort or irritation. This is easily controlled by medication.

Do I need to see the eye surgeon after LASIK?

Yes, you need to come for follow up visits. The first is on the first day after LASIK, then a week after LASIK and the third, one month after the laser procedure.

Some of the immediate tips shared by doctors to care for the eyes after LASIK treatment are:

1. You’ll be back home after LASIK the same day as there is no hospitalization needed. We recommend taking a day off on the day of LASIK to rest your mind, eyes and body.

2. Avoid touching your eyes! It’s the most common way to get an eye infection.

3. You’ll be prescribed eye drops by our LASIK Specialists. Please use them diligently.

4.No headbaths and splashing water in the face for a week. This is to ensure no water goes into the eye as it can cause problems with healing of the eye. You can use a wet wipe to clean your face!

5. Avoid swimming and contact sports for a few weeks after the surgery.

6. No eye makeup especially kajal, threading, any facials for 4 weeks after LASIK. This is to prevent any bacterial infection in the eye.

7. Please come for all your follow up visits! This is to make sure your eye is healing as expected!

Can you use your phone after LASIK?

We recommend you take one day’s break from the screen at the very least and go slow for a few days. But if you need to, you can check with our doctors on your first post- op visit and start using your devices or return to work after checking with them!

Driving after LASIK?

Most patients can start driving after 2-3 days of LASIK procedure. Driving at night should be avoided for a few weeks as you may experience glare at night.

Post-surgery effects on vision  :

Your vision may fluctuate initially for a few days and take a bit to settle down. For most people, maximum effect is seen after a week of the procedure.

Some patients experience eye discomfort, pain, irritation and a slower clearing of vision.

If the irritation or pain persists for a longer time, do visit the doctor immediately.

How long does LASIK Eye Surgery take?

LASIK for eyes is a short procedure that is done in 10-20 minutes depending upon the amount of visual error to be corrected. It is quick & safe.

If the Femto LASIK procedure is being done, it is a blade free LASIK, which means that all the steps are done by Laser.

After the surgery, you can go home immediately and also may start noticing a difference in your vision!
