Dry Age-Related Macular Degeneration

This is the most common and almost found in 90 % of patients. About 10-20% progress to an advanced stage.  In Dry AMD, parts of the macula become thinner with age due to retinal cell loss. There is a slow loss of function in the retinal cells leading to a gradual reduction in eyesight and loss of central vision. 

 

Who is at risk of Dry Age-related macular degeneration?

You are more likely to develop AMD if you

  • Age: The risk increases with increasing age, those over 60 years of age are at a higher risk.
  • have a Family History of AMD
  • have hypertension 
  • have heart disease
  • smoke cigarettes
  • are overweight
  • are Caucasian 

Can you reverse Dry AMD?

Dry AMD cannot be reversed but its progression may be slowed down by 

  • Exercising & maintaining a healthy lifestyle & weight
  • Quitting smoking

Dry AMD Symptoms

Early macular degeneration may not present with any signs or symptoms. Some patients may notice

A gradual worsening of vision

Reduced colour vision

Difficulty in seeing in dim light

Difficulty in recognising faces, fine writing or mobile screens

Straight lines appearing wavy or crooked

Dry Age-related Macular Degeneration Diagnosis

To establish a dry AMD diagnosis, a comprehensive retina eye exam is done. The following tests are done to confirm the diagnosis:

  • Visual Acuity Test 
  • Amsler Grid 
  • Dilated Retina Check by our retina specialists 
  • Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)
  • Optical Coherence Tomography- Angiography (OCT-A)
  • Fluorescein Angiography (FFA)

On examining the eye, retina specialists often note the presence of tiny clumps of a protein called Drusen.

Dry AMD Treatment
